Web Scraping, at its essence, is a method to fetch and extract specific information from websites. For this software or scripts are used to extract particular information from web pages, images, text, or links and then convert it into a format for analysis and storage. 

It’s akin to a librarian carefully copying selected passages from a sea of books in a vast library. Instead of manually noting down the important or key points (address, prices, names, or dates), businesses can do it with scraping tools. 

How Does Web Scraping Work? 

Initiating a Request: The process begins when the scraping tool sends a request to the targeted website. Think of this as knocking on the door of a store you wish to explore

Receiving and Analyzing Data: Once the door is opened, and the website responds, it sends back data in the form of a web page. This is usually in HTML format. The scraping tool then sifts through this data, analyzing it much like a detective looking for clues.

But often, amid this sea of words, we’re hunting for specific patterns, whether it’s an email address, phone number, or a particular keyword. Here’s where text pattern matching, one of the essential data extraction techniques, comes into play.

Text pattern matching is like a digital detective. Instead of looking for clues in a crime scene, it searches for specific sequences or patterns in a body of text. With this technique, you can search for predefined patterns or regular expressions with the required format, structure, or sequence of characters. 

This could be anything from identifying dates in a particular format (like DD-MM-YYYY) to filtering out specific hashtags from a social media feed. This technique ranges from simple to more advanced algorithms. 

How Does Text Pattern Matching Work?

Regular Expressions, often abbreviated as “regex”, is the spellbook for our digital detective. Here’s a brief on how it works:

Scanning the Text: Armed with the defined pattern, the regex tool scans the text, looking for matches. Each time it finds a sequence that matches the pattern, it flags or extracts it. 

Capturing Groups: Regular Expressions can also be used to break down patterns into sub-patterns. For instance, when analyzing dates, you might want to separate the day, month, and year. Regex allows you to do just that by creating “Capturing groups”. 

Optical Character Recognition (OCR): A Data Extraction Technique for Images

Have you ever come across an old printed article or handwritten note and wished you could instantly convert it to digital text, ready to be edited or shared? Welcome to the magical realm of Optical Character Recognition, commonly referred to as OCR. 

In essence, OCR is the bridge between the physical and digital worlds of text. This is an electronic process in which images with typed, handwritten, or printed text are converted into machine-friendly text. It takes static images containing text  _ be it a photo of a signboard, a scanned letter, or a screenshot _ and transforms them into dynamic, editable text. 

How Does OCR Work?

Data wrangling, another essential among data extraction techniques akin to that fruit sorting process, is the act of taking messy, unstructured data and turning it into something organized and ready for analysis. Given that raw data often comes from various sources and in diverse formats, wrangling becomes a crucial first step before any meaningful data analysis or visualization can happen. 

How Does Data Wrangling Work?

Data Exploration: This is the preliminary step where you get familiar with the data. You identify missing values, outliers, or any anomalies that might affect the subsequent analysis. 

Cleaning: Here, errors are rectified, and inconsistencies are addressed. This could involve removing duplicates, correcting typos, or filling missing values. 

Transformation:  Once cleaned, the data might need restructuring. This can mean converting data types, combining multiple datasets, or reshaping a dataset’s format.
